I was talking to my supervisor regarding a Japanese coworker of mine that has been working at the bank for at least 20 years; I asked why she hasn’t gotten a raise or better bonus with all her dedication and hard work at the bank and his reply made me disappointed.

She doesn’t have any allies here.

Really? Because she doesn’t have allies at her job, she isn’t able to get a raise that’s long overdue? She doesn’t take many days off and she’s a hardworker, but that doesn’t count because her supervisors or coworkers in the same department won’t request it?

That’s unfair. I know that having connections in the workplace is important if you want to get hired or promoted, but when has it become so skewed that if they are not in your “group”, they won’t get what they deserve?

She doesn’t request for a raise, because it isn’t in her nature to. She probably feels lonely, when the rest of the coworkers are speaking in Chinese and she doesn’t understand. I talk to her but I’m only one person and cannot make much of a difference. I wish I had the authority to give her a raise, because I notice all the work she does. I wish Corporate America wouldn’t be so uncaring.

I’ve made up my mind about college.

It just so happens that I’ve got a scholarship for school and I’m about to pay off my car. In addition to that, I’ll be applying for grants and financial aid. I think I can now concentrate on going to school? Without worries of having to work?

So, I guess the plan is to quit my job in July or August?

We shall see if I’ll change my mind anytime soon.
